50% - 85% of the world’s oxygen comes from the oceans and they also help regulate the climate. Around 98% of the heat from the sun’s rays are absorbed by the ocean!
Additionally, 94% of all life on earth is aquatic. We need to protect this vital ecosystem!
Half of all plastics ever created were created in the last 15 years. Many communities in the world do not have the developed waste and recycling infrastructure to deal with such amounts. Causing huge amounts of plastic to leak into the environment and specifically into waterways like rivers that carry the plastic into the oceans.
Unfortunately, plastic is projected to double within the next 10-15 years and could even quadruple by 2040!
Plastic pollution affects between 700-1200 species through entanglement or ingestion, both of which can sicken and kill animals.
Additionally to this, recent studies have found that the plastic waste is impacting the growth and reproductive success of some species. Estimates suggest there are 100 million tons and between 15 and 51 trillion microplastic particles floating in the ocean and this plastic may outnumber fish by 2050!
Only 6% of the oceans are currently marine protected areas, yet the oceans are essential for most of the life on earth. Research shows that 46% of ocean plastic comes from fishing nets and overfishing is a major concern for thousands of marine species from by-catch and pollution.
Trillions of fish are taken out of the ocean each year, which is not good for the balance of the marine eco-system.
OCEAN-BOUND PLASTIC
Together with our partners, we work with local communities to recover ocean-bound plastic, while also supporting a global infrastructure of plastic collection hubs with Plastic Bank.
RECYCLING INFRASTRCUTRE
Many communities have limited waste management systems and recycling centers are often only available in larger cities. That is why we partnered with Trash Waste Solutions to build micro-recycling plants directly in communities.
Our pilot project is in Manado, Indonesia.
ABOUT POLLUTION AND SOLUTIONS
When people use our browser extension, we continuously engage them with little messages and questions that highlight the importance of the marine-ecosystem, the issue of ocean pollution and what can be done about it.
PEOPLE WITH THE OCEAN
We believe that it is important to connect people with the ocean to educate and inspire them. That is why we show beautiful images and videos while you browse the web and let people collect bottles together with friends.
We believe that, before one can effectively clean debris from the oceans, the leakage of waste must be stopped in the first place—in other words, the tap must be turned off. Therefore, our primary focus is ocean-bound plastic waste—materials that have not been landfilled and are prone to enter waterways.
We have signed a partnership with Plastic Bank, which primarily collects the following post-consumer waste: HDPE (milk containers, detergent containers, base cups for plastic soda bottles), LDPE (plastic bags, bubble wrap), PET (plastic beverage containers, polyester textiles), and PP (battery casings, dairy product containers). You can check out their website for more information.
Plastic BankBot traffic is bad for OceanHero. We generate revenue only from real users who click relevant ads that ensure positive results for our advertisers. All other traffic, and ad clicks don't generate any revenue. In fact, they only create costs for OceanHero, reducing the amount of money that we can spend on plastic collection. Consequently, we monitor our traffic and quality indicators daily and implement measures, as needed, in order to prevent harmful traffic. So, in a nutshell, normal usage is the best for OceanHero.
Every month, we publish information on the "About Us" page that details how much ocean-bound plastic we were able to collect. Visit this page to learn more about OceanHero.
Learn moreOur partner, Plastic Bank, recycles the collected plastic into so-called social plastic, which is then used to create products that support environmental awareness. You can check out their website to read more.
